Basic Introduction to Primate Classification

PLEASE NOTE: Classification varies, as discussed in class; be sure to refer back to our class taxonomy. Remember Tarsiers are more accurately placed in the Haplorrhini suborder. Also note that she does not include bonobos when discussing the great apes, so keep in mind that there are four main categories of great apes - chimpanzees (Pan troglodyte), bonobos (Pan paniscus), gorillas (Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla beringei), orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abeli). This is a general overview of taxonomy and what characteristics separate the different groups of primates at different levels.
