Dr. Romero-Borja is a physicist with 40-plus years of experience, former university faculty member with teaching and research duties in: Physics, Photonics, Optical instrumentation for vision and material science. He has published scientific articles and books in the fields of relativistic astrophysics, gravitational radiation, optical fiber sensors, optical properties of superconducting / semiconducting materials, spectroscopic instrumentation design, and adaptive optics instrumentation for ophthalmoscopy.

In May 2015, Dr. Romero-Borja was designated as a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) in recognition for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the society and to the field of optics. During the first half of 2018, he was awarded a sabbatical leave, which he spent at the National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Puebla, Mexico collaborating in programs to enhance the quality of teaching and dissemination of STEM subjects. Since 2017 he has been a member of the Scientific  and Organizing Committees of the Meeting on Teaching Competencies for the Natural Sciences and Indigenous Languages (CECELI) organized every summer by the INAOE.
