Academic Advising
Academic Advising is the process between a Student and Advisor that explores the value of education, reviews academic services and policies, and discusses educational and career goals.
Academic Advising "gives insight or direction to a college student about an academic, social, or personal matter. The nature of this direction might be to inform, suggest, counsel, discipline, coach, mentor, or even teach". [Kuhn, T. (2008)]
The Academic Advisors role is to assist students to navigate the institutional system to make appropriate decisions.
The Students role is to explore academic, career and personal goals, being responsible for their own decisions.
Academic Advisors:
- Provide institutional policies, procedures, & resources
- Explain the purpose and value of higher education
- Consider educational and career goals
- Develop educational plans consistent with goals
- Evaluate progress toward goals
- Refer institutional / community support services
