Personal Information

Thomas Urban served as the 2011-2012 President of the HCC Faculty Association and Senate.  Until his retirement from HCC in December 2012,  he was Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at HCC/Northwest College; Assistant NW Department Chair for Philosophy and Humanities; and was Chair of the HCC District Philosophy Program from 2001 through Summer 2011.   Prior to joining the HCC Faculty in August 2001, he was a fulltime member of the Philosophy Faculty of Lamar University in Beaumont, TX.   His areas of specialization include Kant and the Enlightenment, Phenomenology, and Existentialist Philosophy with an emphasis on ethics and human rights.  He holds an M.A. from Ohio University, and PhD from Duquesne University.  His undergraduate degree is from Ohio Wesleyan University. A past president and former board member of the New Mexico-Texas Philosophical Society, he has been a regular referee for the Society’s scholarly journal Southwest Philosophical Studies and until recently was co-chair of the Society's annual Philosophy Student Colloquium.  In July 2013 he became Chair of the American Philosophical Association (APA) Committee for Philosophy in Two-Year and Community Colleges, a position that is continuing through June 2016; and is an active member of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT).
