The Houston Community College Speech Program offers a diverse range of courses. These courses include Introduction to Speech Communication (SPCH 1311), Public Speaking (SPCH 1315), Interpersonal Communication (SPCH 1318), Business and Professionals Communication (SPCH 1321), Voice and Diction, and Argumentation and Debate (SPCH 2335). Courses in the Speech program are designed to address the following Program Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify and explain the components of the communication process, as well as clarify how they relate to diverse communication models.

  2. Research and select appropriate source materials to develop ideas and support claims for oral presentations.

  3. Recognize how to communicate within diverse environments in a socially and personally responsible manner.

  4. Demonstrate critical thinking in both written and oral communication.

Speech courses are designed to introduce students to the art of communication. Our faculty remain committed to our goal of helping students be more competent communicators. All Speech courses teach the Texas State Core Objectives on Critical Thinking, Communication, Teamwork, and Personal Responsibility.

HCC offers an Associates of Arts degree in Communications. The degree is intended primarily for students planning on transferring to a senior college or university to receive a baccalaureate degree. The transfer specifications including tracks in Advertising, Public Relations, Journalism, and Speech Communication.
