AAS and Level II Certificate Programs in Translation and Interpretation provide the basic skills needed to become a translator or interpreter, localization specialist, audiovisual translator. The program offers internship with one of the leading translation companies in Houston - MasterWord Services, MD Anderson, Christ Clinic, Houston Grand Opera, HCC TV etc.

Upon completion of this program, students will be eligible for translator/interpreter/localization specialist/subtitler and other positions in various companies, or they will be able to start their own business as freelance translators in this constantly growing industry. 

The programs are offered within Business Center of Excellence at Houston Community College.

 

What Do Translators and Interpreters Do?

Interpreters and translators convert information from one language into another language. Interpreters work in spoken or sign language; translators work in written language

 

Work Environment

Interpreters work in schools, hospitals, courtrooms, and conference centers. Some work for translation companies or individual organizations, and many translators and interpreters also work from home in remote mode. Self-employed interpreters and translators frequently have variable work schedules. Most interpreters and translators work full time during regular business hours.

 

Job Outlook

Graduates can work as an interpreter and translator in any country.

In the USA, employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 20 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by increasing globalization and by large increases in the number of non-English-speaking people in the United States. Job prospects are best for those who have professional education. 

 

Pay

 According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2019 median pay was $51,830 annually.

 

Program Students Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information presented in source language to provide high quality translation and interpretation to target language through written and oral communication.
  2. Independently edit and revise translation.
  3. Be familiar with translation technologies and become competent in their usage.
  4. Interpret in consecutive mode in legal and medical environment.
  5. Interpret in simultaneous mode (including chuchotage) in multilingual environment.
  6. Subtitle the content of visual materials and localize websites
