TUTORIALS:

Monday and Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 and by appointment

Materials Needed for Every Class:

  • 1 inch Binder
  • Writing Utensils

I will provide you with a spiral notebook, which will stay in my classroom, and a portfolio folder. This is a writing-heavy course, so you will be expected to provide regular written responses to both the readings and class discussion in your notebook. Longer assignments will be kept in your portfolio over the course of the year. Textbooks will be provided but you also may be expected to buy your own copy of novels or dramatic works.

Purpose:

The Dual Credit English IV course will challenge students' written communication skills in order to prepare them for college level writing. By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Provide a close reading of a text.
  • Use evidence to support analytical and persuasive arguments.
  • Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate scholarly sources.
  • Provide appropriate citations for all sources.

Student Assignments:

You will complete a variety of major writing assignments over the course of this year. I will grade these submissions for both style and content, but my primary focus in grading is to evaluate your revision process. You must turn in at least one rough draft for each essay before I will accept a final draft.

This year, you will draft the following essays:

  • College Essay
  • Research-Based Persuasive Paper
  • Analytical Response Papers:
    • Close Reading Paper
    • Thematic Compare and Contrast Paper
    • Analysis of a Dramatic Work/Director’s Statement
    • Analysis of a Visual Artistic Work
  • Creative Writing Paper

Grading:

  • 50% = major grades (essays, tests, projects)
  • 35% = minor grades (quizzes, group and individual activities)
  • 15% = other grades (participation, effort, daily responses)

Make-up Work, Late Work, and Failing Assignments:

  • Make-up work: If you are absent, you may pick up your make up work from the makeup table the next day. Make-up work is due two days after your absence. Make-up work turned in after that window will not be accepted.
  • Late work: I do not accept late work for Major, Minor OR Other grades. All assignments must be finished, printed, and ready to turn in by the beginning of class. You will not be allowed to go to the library to print your assignment. All Major grade assignments must be turned in on paper, not electronically.
  • Failing assignments: If you fail a major grade for reasons OTHER than plagiarism or missing the deadline, you may revise and resubmit the assignment within one week of the due date IF you complete 2 full tutorial sessions. Completion of both tutorial sessions within the week allows for full credit.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is defined as claiming another person’s work as your own. This includes, but is not limited to, directly copying sections of prose or answers from a fellow student or from a digital or print source. If you plagiarize in my class, you will receive a zero on the assignment.

Remind 101: I communicate with my class using Remind. Both students and parents can subscribe to these messages either by visiting remind.com/join/carsondc OR by texting “carsondc” to 81010. A caveat: though I do often send reminders concerning upcoming due dates, students are still responsible for turning in all assignments on time, whether or not they receive a reminder message.

Parents/Guardians: As this is a college course, all students are responsible for keeping up with both in-class and at-home assignments. Legally, I cannot disclose any student’s grade to their parent or guardian, as it is a privacy issue. Please be sure to confer with your student regularly regarding their progress in my course.
