While Orwell's acclaimed 1984 is attributed to launching this genre, as a literary response to Moore's "Utopia" (1516), many other novels and films have since followed in recent decades. Hence, the popularity of dystopian literature has been steadily increasing over the years. Note: dystopia, by definition, is the opposite of utopia.
