course is the study of the American nation from discovery through Reconstruction. Emphasis is placed upon principal characters and events of special note or consequence to aid the student in acquiring an interest in this country's past, to promote the development of critical thinking skills, and to help further student cultural literacy.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:

Divine, Robert A., ET. al., The American Story 4th ed., 2005, ISBN 0-321-42184-1. This is your textbook.

McGaughy, et al, American Perspectives (HCCS History Department Reader) Vol I, 4th edition. This is referred to as the "reader." (Several of your online quizzes are based on articles from the reader.) ISBN: 0-555-03837-8

Martin, James Kirby. Ordinary Courage. Brandywine Press, (any edition). ISBN: 1-881089-47-9

Oates, Stephen. Fires of Jubilee. Harper Perennial, (any edition). ISBN: 0-06-091670-2

SUMMARY:

* This course is 100% online. Liberal access to a computer with Internet access is essential--either from the student's home, office, or a suitably equipped open computer lab. It is not necessary for students to have an Internet e-mail account; because the course interface (Blackboard) provides e-mail service among students and the instructors. Students are expected to be familiar with rudimentary telecommunication skills, such as posting and receiving documents and exchanging electronic mail.

* All of the course files are currently loaded on the web on the Course Contents page. Students will generally study the "lecture notes," read the textbook / reader / monograph assignments, and complete the written work or quiz at a pace of about one unit every four days. The instructor will normally be on line several times per day. Any student questions or comments left as Blackboard email to the instructor will be answered within 24 hours (Monday through Friday). On weekends they will be answered as soon as possible.

SEMESTER GRADE:

* The semester grade will be calculated by: 2 exams (40%); 2 essay assignments (35%); 9 - 15 unit assignments and/or small group activities (15%); and participation in written class "discussion" (10%). The traditional grading scale will be used (90-100 = A, etc.) in determining the semester average. There is no extra credit offered; the lowest grade is not dropped.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

* Students are REQUIRED to keep up with their lecture notes and textbook readings and should acquire a general understanding of the week's topics before attempting to work through the posted assignments. Often an article from the reader will be assigned as the basis for the unit homework. All assignments from the first half of the course are due by the Midterm; all assignments from the second half are due by the Final Exam. This allows students to generally work at their own pace, but eliminates the temptation to procrastinate until very late in the semester.

* Group work opportunities / Quizzes will be offered throughout the semester. One potential weakness of distance education is student isolation--a dearth of the normal give-and-take between students in a classroom setting. In an effort to provide some "live" interaction, students may arrange themselves into groups of 2-5 to answer the unit quizzes through cooperative effort. According to student preferences, contact can be made by voice over the phone lines, by exchange of electronic mail, by meeting in the electronic "Chat" area, or by meetings "in person" at mutually convenient locations. Following the collaboration, however, each student must submit his or her own quiz. Bear in mind that the questions will be in random order from one student's quiz to the next as well as from one attempt to the next. Students may utilize the group mode as often or as little as they like. All assignments may be done independently, if preferred. Also note that the Midterm and the Final are to be taken individually, with no collaboration from a fellow student or outsider.

* Class discussion can be simulated by writing e-mail messages addressed to the entire class (the Discussion Area). Students are encouraged to ask questions, respond to the instructor's (or another student's) questions, and make comments on any of the topics under study. Meaningful participation in at least five class discussions (for the semester) should generate a score of 100%; four contributions would garner 80%, etc. Note that short, one-line comments are often welcome and appropriate to the discussion process, but the comments must demonstrate substantial length and thought in order to "score." The discussion must be posted in the History Discussion Area, not sent as private e-mail to the instructor.

* There will be 2 major exams this semester--with both a major essay component as well as a major objective component. They will be based on the lecture notes, the text, and the monographs-- Ordinary Courage for the Midterm, and Fires of Jubilee for the Final. A review file has been provided beforehand to direct student preparation for the exams. The exams are online --students do not need to come in to a campus to take the test. They are accessed from the Contents Page. The exams are 2-hours, timed. Make-up exams may be given through arrangement with the instructor, but a penalty of ten points will be assessed.

*Instructions for the essays, as well as the essay questions themselves, may be viewed immediately from the Course Contents page. Please read the instructions carefully. The essays are not timed and may be submitted at any time prior to the due dates. It is essential that students submit the final essay at least one week prior to the end of the exam period, so that any questions about completion of the assignment can be worked out before grades are turned in.

*WRITTEN CLASS DISCUSSIONS: Students participate in class discussion by posting messages in an area accessible to the entire class (the Discussion Area). Students will generally respond to the instructors discussion questions, posted in detail on the Course Contents page. In the Discussion Area, there are folders reserved for each units discussion. Students may also choose to respond to the discussion contributions posted by other students. Meaningful participation in at least five class discussions during the semester will generate a score of 100%; four contributions would garner 80%, etc. Comments must be at least 5 sentences long and demonstrate profound thinking in order to score. The Discussions must be posted in the History Discussion Area, not sent as private emails to the Instructor. As the semester progresses, some discussion questions may be closed after the topic has been saturated, but there will always remain sufficient topics for each student to meet the semesters 5-discussion requirement. Participation in class discussion is to be done individually, not in collaboration.

* An attendance policy of sorts will be observed. Students are REQUIRED to log on to the system at least ONCE PER WEEK to get assignments and to upload answers back to the instructors.

* Academic irregularities cannot be tolerated. Attempts to compromise the integrity of this course will result in a zero for the student grade or dismissal from the class. Students must not collaborate on the exams in any way and must not copy material from any source to use as their essay answers or discussion contributions. Students in violation will receive a zero on the assignment. See pages 28 - 29 of the HCCS Student Handbook for details.

* Texas Colleges must demonstrate that the Basic Intellectual Core Competencies are are incorporated into all Core courses. This course addresses the competencies in the following ways:

Reading: The lecture notes, alternative web sites, the textbook, the monographs, and the reader will provide the basis for Unit Assignments, Online Quizzes, Class Discussion (Discussion List), and the Midterm and Final Exams.

Writing: Students will write all contributions to Class Discussion, and will conduct most communication with the instructor through the typewritten word. Students will write answers to essay questions and papers. A portion of the unit homework assignments will be written.

Speaking: Students may phone the instructor for supplemental information or clarification of assignments as needed. Students working in groups have the opportunity to develop their academic speaking proficiency.

Listening: Students will practice critical listening to the streamed audio reviews and / or "talking" PowerPoint presentations. Students working in groups will have the opportunity to develop their listening skills. Students may phone the instructor for spoken explanations and directions.

Critical Thinking: Many of the Unit Assignments contain questions and problems that will require higher-level, "critical" thinking skills to solve successfully. The Midterm and Final exams and essay assignments contain more of the same.

Computer Literacy: Web-based courses such as this one require significant computer literacy from the students, who must be proficient at navigating the web, sending and receiving email, exchanging electronic files, participating in threaded discussions, and using online testing procedures.

BLACKBOARD STUDENT USER ID

Your Blackboard login user ID will be your HCC User ID (sometimes referred to as the W number).
