Tablet and Phone Apps

I'm not going to tell you that these apps are as addictive as Candy Crush. They're not.  What they are is a fairly painless way to learn. Download a few and try them out. After all, Candy Crush doesn't raise your English grade. Grammar Girl does.

Grammar Pop

  • You can grab a copy of Grammar Pop for your iPhone or iPad for $1.99. If your ability to identify parts of speech is a little rusty, this is the game for you! Correctly identify parts of speech and collect points and coins and unlock new levels. As you level up, the sentences get more difficult. Before you know it, you'll be able to identify all of the parts of speech--including gerunds.

  • Grammar Girl brings her knowledge to the radio, and this app takes you straight to her. The app may cost $1.99, but the content is ad free. Grammar Girl produces a podcast every week. One day you'll learn why the English language contains silent letters; the next day you'll learn when NOT to use the word "first." If you don't want to purchase the app, you can listen to the podcasts for free online at http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/grammar-girl-quick-and-dirty-tips-%E2%80%93-complete-archive-of-posts-podcasts

Practice English Grammar

  • So you want an app for your Android device? You want an app that is free? Practice English Grammar is for you. It works with Android and iDevices, and most content is free. (Accessing some content involves making small in-app purchases.) Do you want to know what else it is? It's made in Great Britain. That means that while this is a great app that contains multiple games, flashcards, feedback and an offline mode, it also contains some great examples of British English that differ from American English. Do be careful (especially about spelling and some aspects of punctuation) when you use this app. Even with the British spellings, this app has a lot to offer. You'll learn about comma usage errors, identify passive voice, drill on prepositions--and have fun doing it.
