United States History 2 (HIST 1302)

Course Description: This survey of American history from 1877 to the present day, through lecture, assigned readings, and other media, will explore the major political, social, and cultural trends from the end of Reconstruction through to the end of the Cold War. Students enrolled in this course will sharpen their analytical skills by learning to think and read critically while developing their ability to place events in historical perspective and truly realize that “what is past is prologue. In addition to the content areas mentioned above, upon completion of this course, students will be able to: create an argument through the use of historical evidence, analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources, analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, and global forces that shape post-Civil War American history, and understand the importance of chronology and how earlier ideas and events shaped later developments.
