Women in Literature (English 2353)

Meredith Brooks famously sang, "I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint, I do not feel ashamed, I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between . . . ." See for yourself how all of those manifestations of "woman" appear in a variety of literary genres across diverse cultures. Since gender is crucial to our identity, and since the category of female is defined in connection to that of male, we will discuss many aspects of gender formation, identification, desire, and sexuality. This course counts in your core as a humanities course, as a cross/multicultural course, or as an elective.
