File Global Flight Patterns, 1 minute video 1 min. video (WMV format)of air line flight patterns around the world from morning to night. Note how the flight patterns intensify as day breaks/sets and as dawn and sunset traverse across the globe. Flights to Europe from the US commence in the evening (4-6pm)and arrive early next morning. This is a 24 hour observation of all of the large aircraft flights in the world, condensed down to 1:11. From space we look like a bee hive of activity. What you will see, is a video showing air traffic around the world for 24 hours, taken from a satellite. The yellow dots are airplanes in the sky during a 24 hour period. You will see the light of the day moving from the east to the west, as the Earth spins on its axis. Also you will see the aircraft flow of traffic leaving the North American continent and traveling at night to arrive in the UK in the morning. Then you will see the flow changing, leaving the UK in the morning and flying to the American continent in daylight. You can tell it was spring time in the north by the sun's foot print over the planet. You could see that it didn't set for long in the extreme north and it didn't quite rise in the extreme south. We are taught about the earth's tilt and how it causes summer and winter and we have had to imagine just what is going on. With this 24 hour observation of aircraft travel on the earth's surface, we get to see the daylight pattern move as well. Remember watch the day to night..... Day is over in Australia when it starts. Link How did the world get so large? In 2011, world population reached 7 billion. This clever 2 minute video shows how population has grown by continent since the beginning of time; and how the pressure for more food and energy threatens the quality of life around the world, especially recent dynamic growth in India and China. These challenges must be met by both the US government and leaders of these world countries as the global political landscape changes and become more diverse and complicated. File World at 7 billion people October 2011, the world hit a landmark population of 7 billion. Such a dynamic population surge has major implications regarding food, medication, quality of life, and the energy sources required for survival. Short videos and text. Link 200 Countries and 200 Years of Economic Growth Hans Rosling examines the correlation between income growth and life expectancy in 200 countries over the last 200 hundred years in an amazing animation. His simulation demonstrates the "Rise of the Rest" as under developed countries emerge and thrive but threaten energy resources worldwide and erode the absolute global power once enjoyed by the US. Link "200 Countries", part 2 Follow-up to the 200 Countries video with emphasis on the position of the US and the speed at which 3rd world countries begin to surpass our dominance, thereby requiring more energy and food. Link 5 min. Video: "Rise of the Rest" We are living in an era without a single, dominant world power. The globe is beset by crises -- climate change, resource scarcity, food and financial crises, nuclear proliferation, and failing states. No one country can devise solutions to address these kinds of problems. Video with piano interlude.
