Classical Era Study Guide

Be able to identify the following works of music:

  • Haydn: Symphony No. 94 "Surprise" in D Major, (Mvt. 2)
  • Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in g minor, (Mvt. 1)
  • Mozart: duet  "La ci darem la mano" from Don Giovanni
  • Mozart: Requiem Mass "Confutatis"
  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in c minor,  (Mvt. 1, Mvt. 2, Mvt. 3, Mvt. 4)
  • Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 8 in c minor (Mvt. 2)

Be familiar with basic biographical points for each composer

  • Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
  • Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Know what is expected in each part of a four-movement work (Symphony, String Quartet, etc.)

as well as a three-movement work (Concerto, Piano Sonata, etc.)

If you know what to expect as far as tempo, form and mood, that will be enough.

Know the following forms:

  1. Minuet and Trio form

  • Theme and Variations form
    • Recognizable theme with contrasting moods/treatments

      • Development (unstable, dramatic, drawn from exposition)
      • Recapitulation (theme 1, bridge, theme 2, closing section)
      • Coda (optional)

    also double-exposition sonata form (concerto sonata form)

    Know the following genres:

    • Symphony

    • Piano Sonata
    • Opera Buffa

    Know about Beethoven's contributions to the genre of the symphony

    Know about Beethoven's early, middle, and late periods of composition.

    Know: Da Capo, Aria, Coda, motive, cadenza, exposition
