Chemistry Textbooks Information
Be sure to first check your course syllabus or with your instructor in order to verify that you are purchasing the correct textbook and lab manual for your class.
Textbooks
The textbooks shown below are used for chemistry courses in the HCC system. Occasionally a different textbook is "piloted" in some classes, so it is always a good idea to check your instructor's course syllabus (provided on the HCC Learning Web) before purchasing your textbook.
Lab Manuals
• CHEM 1311 & 1412 have separate lab manuals published by Pearson Publishing available at HCC bookstores.
• CHEM 1105 lab manual for Intro Chem is available online at bluedoorlabs.com.
• CHEM 2423 & 2425, Organic lab manuals are provided either as a custom-published lab manual (by Bell, et. al. from HCC bookstores) or as handouts provided by your instructor. In addition, classes at different HCC locations presently may be using different experiments (suitable for their facilities) so you should verify which manual or online experiments are specified in the syllabus or by the instructor before buying.
eBooks
Electronic versions of textbooks are now available from several sources. Textbooks can be rented in electronic form from VitalSource, generally for a 180 day period. Earlier editions are available from Amazon for purchase or rent.
Online Tutorial & Homework Systems
Your textbook or eBook is usually provided with or is available optionally with online assessment and homework platforms. These are MasteringChemistry for CHEM 1305 and CHEM 1311 & 1412, and OWL2 for CHEM 2423 & 2425. These accounts are active for one to two years, and a passcode is packaged with the print version of new textbooks purchased at HCC bookstores. Check with your instructor about these supplements for your class.
Study Guides
Study guides to accompany the textbook are available at HCC bookstores and in some cases in eBook format. These are optional supplements which provide chapter summaries, practice quizzes, and worked-out solutions to the end-of-chapter problems.
