The mission of Counseling and Disability Support Services (CDSS) at Houston Community College is to provide holistic support for students pursuing their educational goals. In order to accomplish this mission, we will provide a full range of professional services including personal and mental health counseling, career counseling, academic skills enhancement, outreach programming, consultation, and crisis intervention. Counselors help students graduate when they may face problems or academic difficulties. Counselors engage students in various counseling modalities, including Successful Learning Intervention Program (SLIP), with focused interventions to help a student achieve educational, personal and professional goals, while valuing and considering diverse interests, skills, and abilities.
Counselors are available to meet with students by appointment. However, some concerns may be addressed on a walk-in basis. Counselors are at least master's level professionals who are trained to provide mental health counseling services. Students often seek counseling services for the following reasons:
- Career assessment, planning, and exploration (for all students, especially undecided students). Take TypeFocus Career Inventory (HCC-SE Access Code is hccs55), then call (713) 718-7144 and make an appointment to speak with a Counselor regarding your TypeFocus results.
- Personal counseling (below are a few examples of issues presented by students):
- Individuals who have difficulty with self-esteem, communication, or assertive behavior.
- Students having difficulty juggling school, work, and other responsibilities.
- Students trying to adjust to their new surroundings.
- Strategies for managing stress and anxiety (including test anxiety)
- Crisis intervention
- ADA Services to include reasonable accommodations
- Specialized case management for High Risk Students (early alert, 3peaters, behavioral intervention, academic probation/suspension referrals, etc.)
- Community resource information
- SLIP Orientation Survey via Survey Monkey
