About English
The Houston Community College English Program offers a diverse range of courses, including Composition I and II, dedicated to teaching college level writing, Literature courses on all genres and periods, a Creative Writing course that explores multiple genres, and Technical Writing courses that explore writing in technological and business fields. Composition courses teach the analysis of college level texts, an introduction to rhetoric, and how to write arguments for various audiences. While the emphasis is on written communication, students learn about visual, oral, and aural communication--necessary skills in the 21st Century. Literature courses are shaped in various intriguing and creative ways to introduce students to a love of reading, the study of other cultures and ways of thinking, political, social, and philosophical movements, and ultimately a recognition of Self in this complex world. The Creative Writing course offers students the opportunity to both analyze and create works of literature, exploring varied genres and modes of expression. Technical Writing introduces students to various genres in business and incorporates trends in technology. All English courses teach the Texas State Core Objectives of Critical Thinking, Communication Skills, Teamwork, Personal Responsibility, and Social Responsibility and transfer to other universities. The English Program offers an AA in English and prepares students for their academic goals and multiple career paths.
