This is a link to a very humorous article that addresses overly formalistic writing that most students come into college believing is the "right" way to design a formal essay. The reality is that you have a lot of freedom in your writing to say what you want in whatever way you deem easiest for your readers to understand. But easy reading means hard writing. Beyond that principle, I have no other expectations for your essay format besides what is written in your assignment guidelines.
